The movie features such well-known actors as Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rupert Everett and Calista Flockhart.
These contemporary celebrities, combined with a fresh approach to Shakespeare, are what make this version of the story worth viewing.
The movie follows Shakespeare's comedic play about four star-crossed lovers who have a night to remember after a few tricky fairies have some fun at the lovers' expensewith a floral love potion.
The story opens in the palace of the Grand Duke Theseus just before his wedding. The nuptials are interrupted by Egeus, an Athenian father who is begging for the Duke's help.
Egeus has forbidden his daughter, Hermia, to marry her true love, Lysander, and instead arranged for her to marry another man, who also loves her, named Demetrius.
Theseus tells Hermia she has until morning to decide to marry Demetrius, join a nunnery or die.
Adding to the comedy, Hermia's childhood friend, Helena (Flockhart), is in love with Demetrius and follows him around like a lost puppy, waiting for him to notice her.
The fun really starts when a sprightly fairy named Puck finds a magic flower that holds special juice. When the juice is placed on the eyelids of a sleeping person, he or she will fall in love with the first creature seen upon waking.
However, good-hearted Puck makes a few mistakes.
While this cast may initially appear to be simply a conglomeration of pretty faces, the film is really a pleasingly funny show.
