Nicolas Cage isn't the only airborne freedom fighter this summer. Harrison Ford stars in the new thriller from Columbia Pictures, Air Force One.
Ford is cast as United States President James Marshall. Gary Oldman (Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Fifth Element) plays a Russian terrorist leader named Korshunov who captures the president's plane.
The movie begins when President Marshall, while visiting Russia with his family, states all foreign enemies should fear the power of the United States. Afterwards, as Marshall boards Air Force One to leave Russia, a group of Russian terrorists posing as news reporters take control of the plane with the help of a high ranking Secret Service agent. The terrorists wreak havoc on the plane, threatening to kill hostages if the plane is not redirected toward Russia.
The terrorists plan to hold the president hostage in exchange for their captured leader,General Radek. While the Russians take over the plane, Secret Service agents rush the President to the emergency escape pod in order to protect him, but the president has other plans. He climbs out of the escape pod and begins an attempt to retake the plane and save his wife and daughter.
In the meantime, Vice President Bennett, played by Glenn Close, tries to determine the situation on the airplane. The president is feared dead and the fate of the nation is at stake, but the president manages to contact the White House on a cellular telephone and let government officials know he is alive.
The president begins to almost single-handedly kill off the terrorists to regain control of the plane. The president manages to free several hostages but the terrorists use the president's family as a bargaining chip to get the him to surrender.
President Marshall and Air Force One pilots devise a plan to get the hostages off the plane but not before the terrorists find and capture the president.
Non-stop action rules the screen from the moment the terrorists overtake the president's plane. The special effects were good, the dialogue even better. This is a great action-adventure movie.
