Before I went to see Return of the Jedi , I considered printing and wearing a T-shirt that read, "I'd rather be watching Sling Blade ."
Nevertheless, I bowed down to peer pressure and, the sometimes more effective editorial pressure, and there I was, far, far away from anything resembling a new cinematic experience.
Return of the Jedi is, like every piece of the trilogy, a motley of carefully disguised negative stereotypes. The new kids in the galaxy are, of course, the most easily recognizable underdogs in all of film history. That's right fans -- nature's bastard children, the Ewoks. However, George Lucas did spice up the last installment with some industrial smoke and mirrors.
If you plan on seeing Return of Jedi again, or for the first time, here are some things to keep in mind. Keep your eyes and ears open during the scene at Jabba's Palace. The most popular, and frankly the most effective, edits throughout this film involve sound.
Further, to provide a better sense of closure for the rebels and the audience, Lucas shows the reactions of the many other rebel-friendly way stations included in the Star Wars galaxy. Other than that, just keep your eyes peeled at all times throughout the film. Learning from itself, everything in the new and improved trilogy is bigger.
If you simply enjoy films shown on the big screen better than on your television, then go see this film. Although very few things are capable of being overexposed these days, even the Star Wars saga has its limits.
Personally, I think this is clearly the worst film of the three. However, the painfully predictable ending does account for most of Jedi 's negative press. I admit it, I'd love to drop-kick an Ewok, but that's beside the point.
Anyone who loves these films loves all of them, regardless of their flaws. If you're bored and are contemplating prank calling your professor, don't do it, she has caller I.D. Instead, check out the new Return of the Jedi . It's not that bad.
