The date doctor is in.
In “Hitch,” Will Smith serves up another box office smash in this comedy about a man who helps other men get dates.
Alex “Hitch” Hitchens, also known as the date doctor, has, as the trailers describe it, “the cure for the common man.”
Through simplistic dance moves, getting a woman’s attention, and just all-around adorable-ness, Hitch can make a drop dead gorgeous woman fall in love with a completely uncoordinated nerd in just three dates.
But when it comes to falling in love, Hitch (Smith) needs to get a dose of his own medicine. Enter Sara Melas — played by Eva Mendes of “2 Fast 2 Furious” fame — gossip columnist for a tabloid newspaper.
Melas is the typical feminist of today, independent and very opinionated.
When it comes to dating, Melas has barred the idea completely, citing that her career is more important. When she runs into Hitch at a bar, she knows all of his pick-up lines, but one thing that she wasn’t expecting was that he would know how she thinks.
While wrapped up in this game with Melas, Hitch is hard at work making Albert Brennaman — “King of Queens’” Kevin James — catch the eye of heiress Allegra Cole.
Brennaman is easily Hitch’s toughest challenge to date. James plays a bumbling, asthmatic accountant who never speaks up for himself and is always spilling something on his clothing.
Behind that dorky exterior lies a man that is madly in love, or at least infatuated, with a woman who doesn’t even know that he exists.
No movie is complete without the villain that comes in and completely messes everything up.
Hitch’s profession as the date doctor is put in jeopardy after a run-in with a potential client who just wants to use Hitch’s services to get a girl to sleep with him.
Since the profession of the “date doctor” is completely confidential, the problem ensues when Hitch’s name is dropped after a botched date.
Smith and James are comedic geniuses together on screen. This movie is the perfect date movie, because while it is utterly hilarious, it also has that romantic undertone that women love so much. It has all of the classic elements that make up the perfect boy-meets-girl story.
