Requirements:
• Ability and commitment to meet newsroom deadlines
• Participate in news planning, training and general meetings of the senior editorial staff
• Previous news writing or photography experience with The Daily Beacon (usually required and strongly recommended; Other news media experience will be considered.)
• Knowledge of Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual
• Knowledge and practice of University of Tennessee publications policies and newsroom policies
Computer Expertise:
• Macintosh computer familiarity
• Efficiency in computer-based editing
• Efficiency in completing tasks in networked publishing environment
Duties:
• Beat editors are part of the senior leadership team of the Daily Beacon.
• Accept responsibility for upholding the quality and integrity of the newspaper
• Possess and maintain a high level of leadership, writing ability, design, managerial skills, ethics, and familiarity with the campus community and developing events/issues.
• Teach newsroom expectations to new and veteran reporters
• Keep a daily office schedule
• Meet and enforce daily deadlines

Requirements:

Coursework recommended:
• Editing for publication (news and feature writing for print media and internet)--strongly recommended
• Journalism news and feature writing, English composition, public affairs reporting, opinion writing, media law and ethics, business and technical writing, or public writing -- recommended
Computer experience:
• Macintosh computer familiarity
• Efficiency completing tasks in publishing environment>
Duties:
• Develop proficiency in use of computer-based publishing software
• Assure news, feature and opinion articles, graphics and photo cutlines conform to AP style and are free of grammatical and typographical errors
• Write accurate and appropriate headlines

• Knowledge and use of AP news style in articles
• Careful editing of articles before submission to beat editor
• Regular and timely communication and cooperation with beat editor
• Follow newsroom policies and standards
• Attend required meetings/training with editors
Coursework recommended:
• Coursework in journalism feature and news writing—strongly recommended
• Also helpful is coursework in English composition, editing for news/print and web publication; public affairs reporting; media law and ethics; business and technical writing, and public writing
Computer Experience:
• Macintosh computer familiarity
• Efficiency in completing and submitting assignments in networked computing environment

Requirements:
• Experience with HTML and basic UNIX command line essential.
• PHP/SQL experience is highly recommended.
• General UNIX system admin and/or macintosh experience is a plus.
• Journalism experience is not needed.
Duties: Online Editors are responsible for ensuring that the Daily Beacon put on the World Wide Web everyday. They are also responsible for all graphic design and website development. Upcoming site additions will require PHP/SQL experience.
